Christmas Play 2003

On 10th December we staged our Christmas play. As usual, we aimed for originality and seasonality. This year the play,"The Jolly Christmas Postman", was specially written by Sharron Rook, our Pre-school Leader, and Chris Bernard, our Plus 4s supervisor. As always, the emphasis was very much on relaxed fun, with the children being encouraged to explore their talents, but with minimal rehearsals. In fact, we were so laid back that we began to think that the play would be an enjoyable disaster! As it turned out, the children rose to the occasion magnificently. It seems we have a couple of unsuspected show-offs in our ranks!

The full script of the play is set out below. In brief, Joe the Postman, visited various places of interest around Woodcote, in keeping with the Pre-school's tradition of enjoying the 'great outdoors'. These included the school, the library, the doctors' and Somerfield, at which point the children gave a stirring rendition of "Five Mince Pies in a Somerfield Shop". Joe also delivered a catalogue, containing seeds for our allotment, to the garden centre. There was much singing and laughter, plus a lot of "aahing" from mums and dads as their little ones came on, one dressed as a fairy, another as the Rev. Nelva Moss and others as Mary & Joseph, gardeners and choristers etc.

Several children then eagerly grabbed the mic and volunteered to give eye-wateringly cute solos of various songs, including Baa Baa Black Sheep, Row Row Row Your Boat and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, whilst others wished everyone a happy Christmas.

A Christmas tree, kindly donated by Chris and Tanya Goodman, was then auctioned for a truly bargain price.

The Jolly Christmas Postman

Once upon a Christmas Eve
Just after it had snowed
The Jolly Woodcote postman
Came down the winding road
And in the bag upon his back
An interesting load

A parcel for the libraryAn exciting book to share
We love to choose new stories
Whenever we go there

Catalogue for the garden centreSeeds and plants to thrill
To grow on our allotmentWith help from Mr Hill

Rhyme

Mary, Mary quite contrary
How does your garden grow
With silver bells and cockle shells
And pretty maids all in a row.

Joe the jolly postman carries on his way,
And goes to the Primary School
Where the children are at play
They're getting quite excited
It will soon be Christmas day

Rhyme

Georgie Porgie pudding and pie
Kissed the girls and made them cry
When the boys came out to play
Georgie Porgie ran away

Joe the postman waves goodbye
Leaving Georgie cross
And as he goes along the road
He meets the Reverend Moss
"I've got a pile of letters here
Some from your congregation
I expect you're getting ready
For the Christmas celebration"

Rhyme

Here's the church
Here's the steeple
Open the door
And there's all the people
See the vicar running up the stairs
Kneeling down saying her prayers

Next he called at Somerfield
The busy village store
He left his pile of letters
Just inside the door
Jolly Joe the postman
Said "that's all for today"
But out came the manager and offered him a tray of .....

Rhyme

Five mince pies in a Somerfield shop
Nice and round with sugar on the top
Along came Joe with money that day
Bought the mince pies and took them on his way

"Well, cheerio" said Jolly Joe
I really must be off
I've got to see the doctor
As I've had a nasty cough
Oh dear, the snow is coming down
I wish I'd brought my brolly
He went into the Health Centre
And there he met Miss Polly

Rhyme

Miss Polly had a dolly who was sick, sick, sick
So she called for the doctor to be quick, quick, quick
The doctor came with his bag and his hat
And he knocked on the door with a rat-a-tat-tat
He looked at the dolly and he shook his head
And he said Miss Polly put her straight to bed
He wrote on a paper for a pill, pill, pill
I'll be back in the morning for my bill, bill, bill

The snow is gently falling
Our postman has to leave
He has presents to deliver
And it's late on Christmas Eve
He passes by the village church
And hears the children singing
The Christmas play has just begun
The bells will soon be ringing

All Singing

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride on a one horse open sleigh, hey
Jingle bells, Jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride on a one horse open sleigh

Now it's time for us to finish
We have to leave this village hall
So from all at Woodcote Pre-schoolA Merry Christmas - one and all

All Singing

We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
